Thong Cake

Here is the second cake from the weekend just gone. A thong (the shoe guys not the underwear!!, this cake is for a little girl!).  My client’s daughter was having a beach themed party and wanted a thong cake for her.  She knew exactly what she was after, a thong shaped cake which is purple with green and purple flowers.  I was quite excited about this cake as I have not made a thong cake before!  After baking a vanilla cake in a 20cm square tin, I allowed this cake to cool.  I drew a thong shape onto a piece of baking paper which was the size of my tin and cut this out to use as a template.  After cutting the cake to shape, I coated in vanilla buttercream and allowed to set.  After colouring the fondant and cutting some fondant flowers, I began to cover the cake.  Using a lighter coloured purple, I cut a thin piece of fondant using my template to place on top of the thong.  Using some wire covered in fondant, I created the thong straps which were put into place.  I then topped the thong with some decorative flowers.

Now, time to finish off the board.  The appearance of a cake can change dramatically with the finish of the cake board.  I had seen in the Planet Cake book, they make a thong cake and finish the cakeboard with a “sand”.  I created a similar effect by colouring some buttercream and adding raw sugar for texture.  I am happy with the end result as was my client’s little girl.  Happy Birthday Jordy, hope you had a great birthday :) :)

Pink & Purple Fairy Cake

Pink & Purple Fairy CakeThis weekend I made a pink & purple fairy cake for a little girl’s 5th Birthday.  She had a 20cm round vanilla cake with strawberries and cream filling.  The cake was covered in pink vanilla buttercream frosting and decorated with hand modelled decorations.  I made a fairy, a unicorn, a number 5 and some little butterflies and flowers.  The weather was quite warm on the weekend so it was a challenge to keep the buttercream firm.  Mum and Dad of the little girl were happy with the cake and hopefully little Rachael like it too :)

Lightning McQueen Cake

Lightning McQueenLast weekend I made a Lightning McQueen cake for an 8yr old Cars fan.  The cake was a vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream filling.  I had shaped the cake in the shape of a car then coated it with a layer of strawberry buttercream.  The cake was then covered in coloured fondant to resemble the one and only Lightning McQueen. A very happy boy loved his special cake.

Last week’s cakes

I’ve had quite a busy couple of week’s and have therefore been very slack with updating the site.  I have two cakes to show you from last week.  One was a very special cake made for my dear old nan’s 90th birthday and the other was 16 mini spongebob cakes for a three year old’s birthday.

Queen Bee Nan's 90thSo starting with Nan’s cake.  We have always spoke of Nan being the “Queen Bee” of our family, with six children of her own plus grandchildren, great grandchildren and even her first great great grandchild on the way!! At family gatherings she will sit back and take it all in and appreciate the lovely big family she has created hence the name “Queen Bee”.  I thought it would be perfect to create a cake around this theme and decided on a beehive shaped cake with the Queen Bee on top and all her little bees around the hive.  I had initially planned to have this the traditional yellow beehive, bees etc however my Aunties informed me they were having a lilac, silver and black theme for her party.  OK so now I was thinking of scratching the whole Queen Bee Nan's 90thbeehive idea and thinking of going something totally different to fit in with their colour scheme until my mum suggested being a little creative, sticking with my theme and making small changes to fit in with the colour scheme.  So, a lilac beehive it is!!! on a silver board with little silver and black bees.  I decided to keep the Queen Bee yellow and black and gave her a silver crown and star wand.  The actual beehive cake was made from three tiers of round mud cakes, Cherry Ripe mud, caramel mud and white chocolate mud.  Each tier was separated with a thin board for ease of serving and allowing a choice of cake flavour for all guests.  I was happy with the end result and hope that Nan liked it too! Happy Birthday Nan, Love you xxxxx

Mini Spongebob CakesMy next project for the weekend was 16 mini Spongebob Square Pants cakes.  Someone had seen the Spongebob Cake I had made for my niece a few weeks earlier and had a nephew who was also Spongebob mad.  She thought a few mini Spongebob cakes would be the perfect gift for this little three year old and his little friends.  To make these, the cake was the easy part.  A vanilla slab cake which I devided into 16 mini rectangles.  The hard part was covering each of these little fellows with a thin layer of ganache then creating mini Spongebobs with coloured fondant.  This little excercise took HOURS!!! but was well worth the effort!  They looked a treat all set out on the board, the client was happy and hopefully her little nephew was too! :)

Spongebob Square Pants Cake

Last weekend my niece celebrated her 13th Birthday and her most favourite thing in the world is Spongebob Square Pants.  She absolutely adores him! With a Spongebob themed birthday party, there was no question about what cake she wanted.  I used a 28cm rectangle tin and baked a milk chocolate mud cake.  I filled the cake with a chocolate mousse and strawberry oreo filling (a bit of an experiment which paid off) I cut out some sponge holes and covered the entire cake with milk chocolate ganache.  The cake was then covered in coloured fondant to look like Spongebob.  The entire cake was edible including his legs and arms.  My niece was very happy with her cake as where her friends! Hope you had a great party Alysia xx

Jake’s 6th Birthday

Ben 10Today is my little man’s 6th birthday.  I gave him the option of any cake he wanted.  This decision proved quite a difficult task, with the choice changing with each suggestion made.  He finally settled on a Ben 10 cake.  His choice of flavour was vanilla (quite a change from the usual mudcake).  As he chose a plainer type cake, I suggested adding a filling.  Jake is a huge fan of Oreo’s, so we went with Cookies and Cream filling.  Using my awesome Agbay cake leveller, I levelled the 20cm round cake then made a nice cut through the centre.  This is actually the first time I have filled a cake so it was a bit of an experiment for me.  I filled the centre with the freshly made Cookies and Cream filling (next time, I will add double the amount of filling I think).  I covered the entire cake with a thin layer of vanilla buttercream and then decorated with coloured fondant to create a Ben 10 Omnitrix.  Graymatter and all other decorations were hand made with fondant. Jake loved his cake.  Happy 6th Birthday Dude!! xxx

Christmas Cupcakes

Christmas Cuppie Gifts It’s Christmas time and the Christmas cards with candy cane gifts started rolling in from all the little ones at pre-school.  A great little gift for the little ones. My son decided he would like to give every child in his pre-school class a cupcake for Christmas.  He obviously shares his mother’s love of cakes ;) Read the rest of this entry »
